2026-2035 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP)

The Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) is a ten-year work program that includes all regionally significant transportation projects in the MPO planning area.  The TIP includes projects for all modes of transportation including roadway, public transportation, rail, aviation, bicycle and pedestrian.  The TIP is updated every two years, as a subset of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). All projects in the TIP must be consistent with the adopted Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP).

2026-2035 TIP Development Process

The North Carolina State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) identifies the funding amounts, funding sources, and schedules for planned improvement projects over a 10-year period. NCDOT, MPOs, and RPOs update the STIP approximately every two years.

The cycle to update the STIP for 2026-2035 began in the summer of 2023. MPOs, RPOs, and NCDOT Divisions participated in the prioritization process, known as P7 (link to P7 page), to submit and prioritize projects for funding consideration.  Largely due to funding shortfalls, no new projects were programmed in the 2026-2035 STIP for the FBRMPO region and several projects were defunded with the release of the Draft STIP  in early 2025.
